  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Lexington Park is the commercial centre of St. Mary's County, 60 mi (about 97 km) south-southeast of Washington, DC, wrapped around Naval Air Station Patuxent River — the Navy's main aircraft test base. The base is closed to the public, so visitors come for the adjacent naval air museum, the Point Lookout peninsula and the riverside villages of Solomons and St. Mary's City. It is a car destination: Three Notch Road (MD-235) is the spine, and nothing here is walkable end to end.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need a car. MD-235 (Three Notch Road) runs the length of the county and MD-5 and MD-4 are the two main routes in from Washington and Baltimore. There is no useful local rail; buses are limited, so plan on driving to every sight, restaurant and trailhead.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Point Lookout State Park

go

Door to door: 35–45 min

Drive MD-5 south to the tip of the peninsula

Beach, fishing and Civil War prison-camp history; day-use fee per vehicle or per person in season (check).

Solomons

go

Door to door: 15–20 min

Drive MD-4 east over the Patuxent River bridge

Waterfront restaurants, boardwalk and the seasonal Tiki Bar.

St. Mary's City

go

Door to door: 25–30 min

Drive MD-5 south, then MD-247

Colonial capital site and museum; pair with Point Lookout in one loop.

Cobb Island

caution

Door to door: 50–60 min

Drive MD-257 south through Wicomico

Small river village with a couple of waterfront spots; go for lunch, not a full day.

Chesapeake Beach

caution

Door to door: 1 h

Drive MD-4 north through Calvert County

Better as its own stop on the way in or out than a return day trip.

La Plata

skip

Door to door: 45–55 min

Drive MD-5 north

A services town on the route; no reason to detour.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Three Notch Rd (MD-235) at Gate 1

Chain hotels within a short walk of the base gate and the museum; the practical base if you have a car.

California, MD

5–10 min north on MD-235; more restaurants and shops, same highway traffic.

Solomons

8 mi (13 km) east over the Patuxent River bridge; waterfront inns and the Tiki Bar, but a longer commute each morning.

Point Lookout State Park campground

At the southern tip of the county, about 30–40 min from Lexington Park; wooded sites and camper cabins.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime, rural-suburban county; the real risks are highway driving on MD-235, summer heat and ticks in the woods, and alcohol around the Solomons bar strip at closing time.
  • Naval Air Station Patuxent River is an active military base: no public entry, and photography near the fence line can attract attention.
  • MD-235 is a divided highway with fast traffic and few crossings — drive between stops rather than walking the shoulder.
  • Distances look small on the map but add up: Point Lookout is roughly 30–40 min south of Lexington Park.
  • Summer brings heat, humidity and ticks in the state-park woods; carry water and repellent.
  • The Tiki Bar in Solomons is seasonal — open from the third Friday in April to Columbus Day (check).

  3. Place pages with verified hours and fees (naval air museum, Point Lookout, Annmarie Garden) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal fixtures for the Tiki Bar opening and Point Lookout camping so gates can go green.
