Calvi is Corsica's busiest resort town: a Genoese citadel on a rock, a long white-sand bay and a marina full of boats. The town itself is small and walkable in half a day; the reason to stay longer is the sea — the Scandola reserve, the diving and the beach. Most visitors come between May and September, and the town is at its fullest in the first two weeks of August.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: marina to citadel is about 10 minutes uphill, with steps and cobbles. There are no town buses. The Trinité train (red and white) runs along the coast to L'Île-Rousse several times a day and stops near the beach; a second line runs to Bastia. A car is only worth it for the island beyond Calvi — the coast road to Porto and Galéria is slow and winding.

Watch out

Safety

Calvi is a low-risk resort town: petty theft is rare and the centre is safe at night. The real hazards are the heat on the citadel climb, the wind at sea, and Corsican roads if you drive.
  • The citadel climb is steep and hot between 12:00 and 15:00: go early or near sunset, and carry water.
  • The maquis wind (libecciu) can cancel or spoil boat trips: book the afternoon Scandola departure only if the morning forecast is calm, and keep a spare day.
  • Corsica's roads outside town are narrow, often unmarked and sometimes without guard rails; drive only if you are used to it.
  • Parking in Calvi in July and August is scarce and expensive: leave the car at the hotel.
  • Avoid political topics (independence, the FLNC, Napoleon, calling Corsica 'France') with locals; it is not a joke here.
