Ilorin is the capital of Kwara State and the gateway between Nigeria's north and south, 420 km from Lagos by road and rail. It is a working Yoruba-Fulani city with an Islamic core, a university, and Nigeria's largest traditional pottery workshops. Sights are few and spread out, so most travellers use it as a one-night stop between Lagos and the north rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

Green-and-yellow taxis and keke NAPEP tricycles cover short hops; okada motorbike taxis are fastest for one or two people. Maigida Soludero mass-transit buses run from the Post Office terminal to the university, Tanke and Offa garage. Agree the fare before you board, and let a local confirm the going rate — quotes for visitors run high.

Safety

Daytime movement in the centre is fine; the real risks are okada crashes, unlit roads after dark and cash-only scams. Go in groups at night, use pre-booked cars, and check your government's Kwara State advice before you travel.
  • Okada accidents are common; helmets are required but often ill-fitting. Refuse a ride without one.
  • Move in daylight and in groups after dark; stick to known routes and pre-booked cars at night.
