Kindia

Kindia is a half-day stop for the waterfalls and Mount Gangan hike, not a base: 0–1 night is enough if you have your own transport from Conakry.

Kindia, 130 km northeast of Conakry on a good road, is a market town and a gateway to waterfalls (Voile de la Mariée, Cascade de Tabouna) and Mount Gangan. Most visitors pass through for a few hours or one night. The town itself has little to detain you beyond the large market and a couple of guesthouses.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.

Watch out

Safety

Kindia is generally safe, but watch for pickpockets in the market and at the gare routière. Checkpoints on the Conakry road are routine; keep documents handy. Avoid walking alone after dark outside the centre.
  • The road from Conakry is good but has police checkpoints; carry your passport and visa.
  • Mount Gangan guides may insist they are mandatory; negotiate the fee beforehand (check).
  • ATMs are limited: Vista GUI bank has no fee for Visa; Société Générale charges 6,900 GNF (check).
  • Les Eaux de Kilissi's location on Google Maps is wrong; ask for directions in town.
