Romsey is a small Test Valley market town of about 14,000 people, 5 minutes on foot from its station to a high street built around Romsey Abbey, the largest parish church in Hampshire. The town itself fills an easygoing half day; the reasons to sleep here are Mottisfont, the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and the northern edge of the New Forest. Trains run hourly to Southampton, Salisbury, Bath and Cardiff, so it works as a quiet stop on a wider rail trip rather than a destination in its own right.

Getting around

The centre is flat and small: station to abbey is a 5-minute level walk and the whole high street takes under 15 minutes end to end. Local buses run to Ampfield, Braishfield and the villages, and a free summer Sunday and bank-holiday minibus links the centre with Romsey and Mottisfont & Dunbridge stations and the outlying gardens. For Mottisfont, Paultons Park or the New Forest you want a car or a taxi.

Safety

A low-crime market town; the practical risks are unlit lanes and no pavement on village roads after dark, and the last bus leaving before you have finished dinner.
  • Saturday parking fills up; parking is free after 16:00.
  • Broadlands opens only on selected days and hosts concerts — check dates before travelling.
  • Mottisfont is National Trust: book a slot in rose season (June) or you may be turned away.
  • River Test fishing needs a permit bought in advance; there is no casual day ticket on the bank.
  • Rural buses are thin in the evening — check the last service back from the villages.
