Kissimmee sits just south of Walt Disney World on US 192, the strip locals call Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. It is a bed base more than a sight base: cheaper motels, thousands of vacation rentals, dinner shows, airboat rides on the edge of the Everglades headwaters, and a small downtown with a SunRail stop. Choose it to sleep cheap and drive to the parks; skip it if you want to walk everywhere.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: US 192 runs west–east through the tourist strip, I-4 and FL-417 link to Orlando and the airport, and Osceola Parkway is a toll road parallel to 192. Lynx buses cost $2 a ride with transfers included but run infrequently. SunRail commuter trains reach downtown Orlando in about 25 min; Amtrak's Silver Star and Silver Meteor stop at the downtown station. Rideshare works for park drop-offs but surges at closing time.

Safety

Kissimmee is a normal tourist town: the main risks are traffic on US 192, summer heat and storms, and alligators in any fresh water. Petty theft from cars happens around the strip — leave nothing visible.
  • Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms: plan park mornings, indoor afternoons.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; watch forecasts if you travel then.
  • US 192 traffic backs up badly at park opening and closing.
  • Florida Turnpike exits often use exact-change or electronic tolling: carry coins or a transponder.
  • Some US 192 motels are cheap for a reason: read recent reviews before booking.
  • Do not swim in lakes or canals: alligators are present.
