  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Check whether your passport is visa-exempt; if it is not, apply only at evisa.gov.tr — lookalike sites charge extra and some sell nothing.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗At mosques cover shoulders and knees, take shoes off at the door, and women carry a headscarf; stay out during prayer times.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Taxis must run the taximeter; refuse flat quotes, or book through BiTaksi or Uber so the ride is logged.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Carry lira in small notes for tea, markets, tips and toilets; prices move with inflation, so treat every printed price as dated.
  • Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Do not take stones, coins or tiles from ancient sites, and export no antiques without a museum certificate; travellers have been detained at airport customs.

Antalya is the main city and airport of Turkey's Mediterranean coast. Its old quarter, Kaleiçi, has an Ottoman-era harbour and a Roman gate, Hadrian's Gate, and the modern city sprawls behind it. Perge, Aspendos and Termessos are within a day, and resorts run along the coast on both sides. Go for the sea and the ruins, and skip midsummer if heat bothers you.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A tram (T1) runs from the old town through the centre, and buses and dolmuşes cover the rest; a rechargeable Antalyakart is the cheapest way (2026 estimate: a few TRY per ride, check). Ruins and coast towns need a rental car, bus or tour.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Perge and Aspendos

go

Door to door: About 45 min–1 h

Bus or car east, about 15 to 45 km

Perge first, then Aspendos, whose Roman theatre is well preserved.

Termessos

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or taxi northwest, about 35 km

Mountain city with steep paths; go in the morning and bring water.

Olympos and Çıralı

caution

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Bus or car south, about 80 km

Ruins and beach; better as an overnight or a stop toward Kaş.

Pamukkale

overnight

Door to door: About 3.5 h

Bus or car north, about 220 km

Too long for a comfortable return day.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Kaleiçi

Old town and harbour; walkable, restored Ottoman houses as small hotels.

Lara

Resort and beach strip east of the centre; quieter, needs transport, many all-inclusive hotels.

Konyaaltı

Long pebble beach west of the centre; the tram and the museum are nearby.

Watch out

Safety

Antalya is generally safe for visitors; expect taxi overcharging, aggressive touts around Kaleiçi and heat as the main issues.
  • Midsummer heat is intense; swim and sightsee early or late.
  • Agree taxi fares in advance or insist on the meter; airport taxi touts overcharge.
  • Shoulder-season hotels and some restaurants close from November to March.
  • Beach clubs and boat trips can add extras; ask what the price includes.
  • Strong currents and jellyfish occur; follow flag colours on the beaches.
  • Check current government travel advice for your country before you go; Turkey is generally open to visitors but advice varies by region, especially near the Syrian and Iraqi borders.
