Richmond, CaliforniaRichmond

Base in Point Richmond or Marina Bay, not central Richmond: 1–2 nights for the Rosie the Riveter park, the Red Oak and the bay trail.

Richmond is a working Bay Area city on the east shore of San Pablo Bay, 30–40 minutes from San Francisco by BART and linked to Marin by ferry. Its draw is narrow and specific: the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park, the restored Red Oak Victory ship, the Point Richmond historic district and shoreline trails. The Iron Triangle and central Richmond have the crime reputation; the bayfront neighbourhoods south of I-580 are the ones visitors use.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

BART and Amtrak share the Richmond transit center at 1700 Nevin Ave; BART runs direct to Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. AC Transit buses cover some sights but not all — the Red Oak Victory and Ferry Point have no useful bus service, so plan a car, taxi or rideshare for those. The San Francisco Bay Ferry calls at the Richmond terminal on Harbour Way South several times a day.

Hilltop / San Pablo

Chain hotels with parking and free breakfast; you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Richmond's crime reputation is real but concentrated: stay in Point Richmond and Marina Bay south of I-580, or Hilltop, and avoid the Iron Triangle and central Richmond at night. Daytime sightseeing in the visitor zones is normal big-city caution.
  • Avoid the Iron Triangle and central Richmond around Cutting, McDonald and Barrett at night.
  • Some sights are not on a bus line: the Red Oak Victory and Ferry Point need a car or rideshare.
  • The Amtrak stop has no ticket counter, no baggage service and no luggage help.
  • Point Richmond and Marina Bay are the safe visitor zones; Hilltop and East Richmond are fine by day.
