Castleton is a village of about 600 people inside the Peak District National Park, at the foot of a limestone gorge. It packs four show caves, a Norman castle and the start of the Mam Tor ridge walk into a 15-minute walk. Two nights covers it; the village is small, so book beds early for weekends and school holidays.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in 15 minutes. Buses run to Sheffield and Hope station, and train tickets are accepted on the Castleton–Hope bus. There is no bus west through Winnats Pass, so the Blue John and Treak Cliff caves and Mam Tor need a car, a taxi or a 25–40 min walk uphill.

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, steep ground and cave steps. Tell someone your route, carry a map and a torch, and call 999 for mountain rescue.
  • Cave opening hours and tour times change by season: check each cave's site before you travel.
  • Winnats Pass is a narrow, steep road with no pavement; walkers should use the footpath, not the road.
  • The Great Ridge is exposed: take waterproofs and a map, and turn back in cloud or ice.
