Betws-y-Coed is a village of 564 people inside Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, on the A5 and the Conwy Valley branch line. It is a base, not a sight: riverside walks, forest trails and waterfalls start from the centre, and the wider park needs a car or a bus. Two nights covers the village and one excursion; three if you want a mountain day.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. For anything outside it you need a car, a bike built for hills, or the sparse S2 bus (Llanrwst–Capel Curig, roughly every 1–2 hours on workdays). The Conwy Valley line runs about every three hours Monday–Saturday.

Safety

Very safe for a village of this size; the real risks are mountain weather, unmarked paths and dark lanes with no pavement after the pubs close. Tell someone your route and carry a torch in winter.
  • Buses are thin and uneven: some run only on certain days, and Sundays have almost no service except the S2.
  • The train from Llandudno Junction runs roughly every three hours Monday–Saturday, so a day trip by rail can strand you.
  • Swallow Falls charges about £1 (≈ US$2) through a turnstile; Pont-y-pair and Miners Bridge give free river views closer in.
  • Mountain weather changes fast; carry waterproofs and a paper map, as phone signal is patchy outside the village.
  • Book beds and tables for summer weekends and bank holidays: the village fills with coach groups.
