Banbury is a working market town in north Oxfordshire, 1 hour from London Marylebone by train and a junction on the M40. It is known for the nursery rhyme, Banbury Cross and Banbury cakes. The centre is small and walkable; the real draw is the canal, the museum and the town as a cheap base for Bicester, Oxford and the north Cotswolds.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable: station to Banbury Cross is about 15 min on foot. Stagecoach local buses (routes starting with B) cover the town; a single is about £2.20 and a Banbury day ticket about £3.40. Taxis wait at the station and Market Place. For the villages and Broughton Castle you need a car or a taxi.

Safety

Banbury is a normal, safe English market town by day. The main issues are drink-related noise on Parson's Street at weekends and quiet streets around the station late at night: stay on lit routes and use a licensed taxi.
  • Buses and trains thin out in the evening; check the last service before a late dinner.
  • Some pubs and bars on Parson's Street get loud and busy on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Castle Quay car park charges by the hour and is cash or card; check the current tariff on arrival.
  • Upton House and Broughton Castle have limited opening days and seasons: check before travelling.
