Franz Josef is a one-street village on the West Coast of the South Island, 5 hours by road from Christchurch and 2 hours from Greymouth. The glacier itself has retreated far up the valley, so the free walk to the viewing area is long and the ice is now reached by helicopter. Two nights is the working answer: one day for the valley and one buffer day, because West Coast rain cancels flights and shuts tracks.

The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. You need a car or a shuttle for the glacier car park, 4 km south of the centre, and for Fox Glacier. InterCity coaches stop on Main Road opposite the Four Square.

Watch out
Safety
- Never cross the barriers at the glacier terminal face: ice collapse and rockfall kill people here.
- The valley track closes during heavy rain and after flood warnings; check the DOC page before you set out.
- Scenic flights and heli-hikes are weather-dependent and cancel often; build in a spare day rather than booking the flight for your departure morning.
- SH6 between Hokitika and Fox Glacier closes after slips and floods; check the NZTA journey planner before driving.
- Sandflies are fierce in the valley and around the hot pools: bring repellent.
- Fuel and groceries are limited and priced for a remote village; fill up in Hokitika or Greymouth.
