Delta is a municipality of about 108,000 people in Vancouver's southern suburbs, split into three built-up areas that do not touch: North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. It has no SkyTrain, so every trip runs on buses or a car. Most travellers touch Delta only at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal, on the way to Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands. Its real draws are flat, open shoreline: Boundary Bay Regional Park, the Reifel bird sanctuary and Burns Bog.

Getting around

TransLink buses only; there is no rapid transit in Delta. Route 601 links Tsawwassen and Ladner to Bridgeport station (SkyTrain Canada Line) in Richmond, and route 620 runs to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. Route 640 connects Ladner Exchange to Scott Road station in Surrey. Compass Card, Compass Ticket or contactless tap; 90-minute transfers. A car is far more practical: Highway 99 runs north–south, Highway 17 links it to the ferry terminal, and Highway 10 runs east to Surrey.

Watch out

Safety

Delta is a low-crime suburban municipality and safe by day; the real risks are winter rain and dark, unlit roads, fast traffic on Highway 99 and 17, and tide flooding on the Boundary Bay mudflats. Keep valuables out of sight in ferry-terminal parking lots.
  • No SkyTrain in Delta: budget 45–75 min by bus to reach Vancouver or Richmond.
  • Tsawwassen ferry sailings fill in summer; book ahead and arrive 30 min before if you hold a reservation.
  • Boundary Bay mudflats flood fast at high tide: check the tide table before walking out.
  • Reifel sanctuary bans dogs and bicycles and needs a reservation.
  • The Point Roberts crossing at 56th Street is a dead-end US peninsula reached only through Canada: carry your passport both ways.
