Batemans Bay sits where the Clyde River meets the sea, about 280 km south of Sydney and 2–2.5 h from Canberra on the Kings Highway. The town itself is plain; the reason to stop is the water — Clyde River oysters, Murramarang National Park beaches and the villages of Mogo and Nelligen. Summer doubles the population, so beds vanish in December and January.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: beaches, Mogo and Murramarang are spread out and buses are thin. Prior's Bus Service runs local routes and Batemans Bay Taxis covers short hops. The Princes Highway (A1) runs through town; the Kings Highway (B52) climbs to Canberra with tight 25 km/h corners down the Clyde mountain.

Safety

A relaxed coastal town; the real risks are the highway drive in, unpatrolled surf and summer crowds. Lock the car at trailheads and beach car parks.
  • December and January fill up: book beds months ahead, not days.
  • Both the Princes and Kings highways have a high crash rate; single lane each way, no divider, 100 km/h limits.
  • Swim between the red and yellow flags where surf life saving clubs patrol; most beaches are only patrolled in summer.
  • Clyde River National Park campgrounds are unpowered and one is 4WD-only; no caravans or trailers at Beach Campground.
