Saint-Jérôme is a city of about 68,000 people 45 km northwest of Montréal, at the foot of the Laurentians and the start of the P'tit Train du Nord rail trail. It is a transport gateway more than a destination: a cathedral, a contemporary art museum, a rail trail and a commuter train back to Montréal. Most travellers use it for one night on the way north, or as a cheap, car-free day out from Montréal.

Downtown is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Exo commuter trains and buses link the city to Montréal and Laval; a car is needed for the ski centre, the lake and the Autoroute 15 corridor. The Route verte and P'tit Train du Nord trail run through town for bikes and, in winter, cross-country skis.
