Getting around

The town centre is flat and walkable. Cycling is the best way to cover ground: roads are quiet, Raymond Island is flat, and the ferry carries bikes free. A car helps for Eagle Point, the Silt Jetties and Bairnsdale. Boats and kayaks can be hired in town for lake access.

Very safe for a small lakeside town; the real risks are cold water, sun, weak mobile signal away from town and boats without a current safety check.
  • Mobile signal is weak outside the town centre; Telstra is the most reliable network, others struggle.
  • After heavy rain the lakes freshen and shellfish die off, leaving a smelly shoreline for a few days.
  • Small jellyfish appear in the lakes in summer; they are usually harmless but check locally before swimming.
  • The nearest ocean beach by road is about 50 km away at Lakes Entrance — the lake beach is calm, not surf.
