Duisburg is a working steel and logistics city on the western Ruhr, with Europe's largest inland harbour and one of Germany's best industrial-heritage parks. Sights sit far apart and the centre is quiet after dark, so most travellers use it as a day trip from Essen or Düsseldorf rather than a base. One day covers the park, the inner harbour and the Mercator collections.

Getting around
DVG runs three trams (901, 903, U79) and 32 bus lines; all three trams cross the centre underground and share Hauptbahnhof and König-Heinrich-Platz stops. Buy tickets in the DVG app, at machines or from the driver (single rides only). U79 links to Düsseldorf slowly; regional trains and S1 are faster between Ruhr cities. Driving is easy off-peak but the Umweltzone needs a green sticker, which rental cars carry.

- Sights are spread across the city; plan tram legs rather than walking between them.
- Some older trams still have steps and many stops lack raised platforms; only U79 offers level boarding at nearly all stops.
- Autobahn junctions A3, A40, A42 and A59 jam at commuting times.
