Lyttelton is Christchurch's port, sitting inside an extinct volcano's caldera just over the Port Hills. It is small, steep and walkable in an hour, with a rebuilt Timeball Station, a Saturday farmers' market and a handful of bars. Most travellers visit as a half-day or a day trip from Christchurch rather than staying, unless they want a quiet harbour base away from the city.

On foot. The town is small but hilly, and the distances are too short to justify waiting for a bus. Use the number 8 bus for Christchurch; drive or take a taxi for Godley Head and the outer bays.

Watch out

Safety

A small, safe harbour town; the real risks are steep streets, wind on the headland and cold water in the harbour. Standard New Zealand advice applies: 111 for emergencies, 105 for non-urgent police.
  • Steep, narrow streets: driving in town is more hassle than walking.
  • The road tunnel (SH 74) is the easy route from Christchurch; the Port Hills roads over Dyers Pass or Evans Pass are twisty and slow.
  • Godley Head campsite is exposed to wind and its water supply is untreated: bring your own or treat it.
  • Summer nor'westers and coastal wind can cancel harbour sailing and make the headland walk unpleasant.
