Give Chiclayo 2 nights as a museum base for Sipán and Túcume, not as a beach stop: Pimentel is a 20-min taxi and has a robbery record.
Chiclayo is a working northern city of about 550,000 people, and its value is archaeological: the Royal Tombs of Sipán museum in Lambayeque and the pyramid site at Túcume are the reason to come. The centre is compact and cheap to cross by taxi, but the sights sit 18–35 km out of town, so you need two nights and a plan for combis or a hired car. Most travellers pass through on the Lima–Trujillo–Máncora bus corridor; two nights is enough to see the Moche and Sicán collections properly.

Getting around
Tico taxis cross the centre for about S/ 3 and mototaxis for roughly half that; agree the fare first. Combis to Lambayeque, Ferreñafe, Sipán and Túcume leave from Terminal Epsel (Av. Piérola at Av. Quiñones) and from Ovalo del Pescador for Túcume and Mórrope. Uber operates in the city. Day trips to the outlying sites are easier with a taxi by the hour than with combis.

Safety
- The centre, bus offices and markets are where thieves work: keep phones and cameras out of sight, especially around Mercado Modelo.
- Pimentel beach has a record of daylight robberies near the sand; go with a group and take little.
- Bus terminals are spread across the city, so confirm which one your company uses before you leave for it.
- Museum labels at the Sipán museum are in Spanish only; read up before you go.
