Probolinggo is a working port and fishing town on Java's north coast, about 2–3 hours by bus or 2 hours by train from Surabaya. Almost nobody comes for the city itself: it is the lowland staging point for Mount Bromo, 1.5 hours away by minibus from the Bayuangga terminal. The town has a colonial-era station, a small museum, a mangrove park and a beach, plus cheap food and beds. Treat it as a logistics stop, not a destination.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Angkot minibuses and MPU run fixed routes from Bayuangga terminal to the centre and on to Kraksaan, Pasuruan and Cemoro Lawang. Gojek, Grab and Maxim work in town but are banned from picking up right at the bus terminal and train station: walk a block away first. A bemo between the station and the bus terminal is about Rp4,000.

Safety
- Travel agents around the terminal sell marked-up or fake Bromo tickets: buy at the terminal or on the bus.
- Online-taxi pickup is restricted at Bayuangga terminal and the train station; walk clear of the gate.
- Bromo minibuses leave only when all 15 seats are full, so late-afternoon departures can stall.
- The city is a transit town with little to see after dark; don't plan an evening of sightseeing.
- Rainy-season mornings often hide the Bromo viewpoint completely.
