Ogdensburg

One night is enough: Remington museum, Library Park and the riverfront in half a day, then cross to Canada or push on along NY 37.

Ogdensburg is a small St. Lawrence River city on the Canadian border, opposite Prescott, Ontario. Its draw is the Frederic Remington Art Museum, a compact historic district and the river itself; most travellers use it as a one-night stop on the North Country loop or as a bridge crossing into Ontario. Sights are walkable in the centre, but a car is needed for the motels and riverside resorts outside town.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk, but the motels, marina and riverfront resorts sit along NY 37 outside town, so a car is the practical choice. Local taxis serve short hops; there is no city bus network for visitors.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small city; the real risks are winter driving on NY 37, ice near the river and thin services after dark. Lock your car and keep to lit streets downtown.
  • Winter brings heavy snow and ice; drive to conditions on NY 37 and the bridge.
  • The border crossing at the Prescott-Ogdensburg bridge has its own rules and queues: carry your passport and check current entry requirements before crossing.
  • Many restaurants and small museums keep limited hours or close early: check ahead, especially off-season.
  • Cell coverage and services thin out fast on the rural stretches along the river.
