Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (SQY) is a 1970s new town of eleven communes southwest of Paris, not a historic town. It holds France Miniature, a national velodrome and the gateway to the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse park, plus a large stock of late-20th-century architecture. Most visitors come for one of those, not for the place itself.

Getting around

The town is spread over 11 communes and public transport is thin for its size. SQYBUS buses link the centres, €1.90 a single bought on board (cards often not accepted), and run infrequently at weekends. Walking between communes is cut by the N12, motorways and the railway. A car or bike makes the area far easier.

The town centre is calm and middle-class; the main caution is Trappes, which has a history of crime and riots — avoid the Merisiers estate, especially at night. Elsewhere, normal big-city awareness is enough.

  • SQYBUS buses are infrequent on Sundays and public holidays; check the last bus before an evening out.
