Lahinch is a small surf and golf town on Clare's Atlantic coast, about 30 km west of Ennis and 10 km south of the Cliffs of Moher. It works as a two-night base for the cliffs, the Burren and the coast road, not as a stop you tick off in an afternoon. Book beds early for July and August, when the population of about 1,000 swells with surf schools and golf visitors.

Getting around

The town, beach and golf club are walkable. Ennistymon and Liscannor are 4 km away each and the Cliffs of Moher are 10 km north, so a car or taxi covers those. Bus Éireann 333 links Ennis, Ennistymon, Lahinch, Milltown Malbay and Kilkee; bus 350 runs the coast from Galway via Doolin and the cliffs to Ennis. Both are infrequent — check the current timetable before you plan a day around them.

Watch out

Safety

Lahinch is a low-crime small town; the real risks are Atlantic surf and rip currents, wet cliff edges at the Cliffs of Moher, and narrow roads with walkers and cyclists. Swim and surf with a school or lifeguards, and stay back from the cliff edge in wind.
  • The beach is covered at high tide; check tide times before you plan a walk or a lesson.
  • Surf breaks on the south side of the beach suit experienced surfers; beginners should use the north side with a school.
  • Cliffs of Moher parking is expensive; walkers park at Kilconnell (about €3 (≈ US$4)) and walk the cliff tops for roughly two hours to the visitor centre.
  • Many hotels and restaurants close or cut hours from November to February; confirm before booking a winter trip.
  • Village pubs and restaurants can be full in July and August — book dinner or eat early.
