Ruthin is a small Denbighshire market town with one of Wales's best groups of timber-framed buildings, a Victorian gaol you can walk through and a river-and-castle loop of about a mile. The town itself fills a half day to a day; the reason to sleep here is the Clwydian Range, Moel Famau and the Horseshoe Pass on the doorstep. Come May to September for the walks, or in December for the Christmas market.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Bus 73 loops the town (Tesco, Market Square, St Peter's Square, Tyn y Parc, Porth y Dre, Trem y Foel). For the Clwydian Range, Llangollen or Denbigh you need a car or a booked taxi: rural buses are thin, especially on Sundays.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime market town; the real risks are wet, unlit lanes after dark, fast traffic on the A494 and A525, and hill weather that turns quickly on the Clwydians. Standard UK advice applies: 999 in an emergency, 111 for NHS non-urgent.
  • No railway station: you arrive by bus from Wrexham, Chester or Rhyl, or by car.
  • Rural buses run a handful of times a day and barely at all on Sundays: check the timetable before you rely on one.
  • The gaol and Nantclwyd y Dre keep limited seasonal hours: check before travelling.
  • Hills and lanes around Moel Famau are narrow and often wet: boots, not trainers.
