Hinton

Stop for one night on the Yellowhead Highway: coffee, the Beaver Boardwalk and a bed, then drive on to Jasper 80 km (50 mi) west.

Hinton is a working town of about 10,000 in the Athabasca River valley, 80 km east of Jasper National Park on Highway 16. It is not a destination in itself: it is the last full-service town before the park gates, with cheaper beds than Jasper, a free forestry museum and a beaver boardwalk that makes a genuine hour-long leg-stretch. Most travellers use it for one night in each direction, or as a base for Willmore Wilderness trips.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

You need a car. Hinton Transit runs one local route with hourly service, no Sunday or holiday service and reduced summer hours, so it is of little use to visitors. Everything on the highway strip is a 5–10 min drive from the valley. Taxis are limited; book ahead for early departures.

Watch out

Safety

A safe, quiet town; the real risks are the drive (wildlife at dusk, winter ice, wildfire smoke) and long distances between services. Standard Canadian city caution after dark around the bars.
  • Distances are long: Jasper is 80 km (50 mi) west, Edmonton about 300 km (186 mi) east. Fill the tank before either leg.
  • Wildlife on Highway 16, especially elk and deer at dusk. Do not stop on the road to look.
  • Summer wildfire smoke can close Highway 16 and park access with little notice: check Alberta 511 and Parks Canada before driving.
  • Winter driving is real: snow tires or all-weather tires and an emergency kit, temperatures can sit below −20 °C (−4 °F).
  • Cell coverage is patchy west of town toward the park boundary.
