Iligan

Give Iligan 2 nights for the waterfalls and Timoga springs; skip it if you only want beaches — the coast here is industrial, not resort.

  • Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
  • Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
  • Philippines ↗Complete the free eTravel registration on the official government site within 72 hours before arrival; ignore lookalike sites that charge.
  • Philippines ↗Typhoon season runs roughly June to November: flights and boats are cancelled at short notice; buy flexible tickets and keep a spare day.
  • Philippines ↗Carry pesos in small notes; many stalls, jeepneys and taxis are cash-only.

Iligan is Mindanao's industrial city with a tourist side: more than 20 waterfalls within about 30 km, cold spring pools at Timoga, and a location outside the main typhoon belt. It is not a beach destination. Most travellers come for two nights from Cagayan de Oro or as a stop between CDO and Ozamiz, and use jeepneys and habal-habal to reach the falls.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Jeepneys are the main transport, minimum fare ₱7.50. Taxis are radio-dispatched — call a dispatcher rather than flag one down. Habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) reach the falls and hinterland barangays; agree the fare before you ride. Tartanillas (horse-drawn calesas) still run through Pala-o and Tambacan.

Jeepney or habal-habal southwest of the centre, then local transport between sites

Do both in one half-day; go early, before tour groups.

Mt. Agad-Agad

caution

Door to door: Half to full day

Habal-habal to the trailhead, then a hike of a few hours

Easy climb, but start early and do not descend after dark without a light.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown (Poblacion)

Banks, malls, jeepney routes and the cheapest pension houses; best base without a car.

Tibanga

Highway strip with budget inns and cafés; easy pick-up for habal-habal and buses.

Pala-o

Quiet residential area with pension houses; tartanilla (horse-cart) routes pass through.

Timoga / Buru-un

Spring-pool resorts southwest of the centre; stay here only if pools are your main plan.

Watch out

Safety

Iligan sits outside the main typhoon belt and is generally calm for visitors, but the real risks are wet-season river and falls conditions, unlit roads at night, and motorcycle taxis: wear a helmet, fix the fare, and avoid swimming after heavy rain.
  • Falls and river pools can flood or turn dangerous after heavy rain: ask locally before swimming.
  • Some waterfall and cave sites need a guide or a permit from the City Tourism Office; arrange it the day before.
  • ATM fees for foreign cards run about ₱250 (≈ US$5) per withdrawal, and per-transaction limits are low (₱10,000–20,000 (≈ US$180–400)): take enough cash.
  • Habal-habal fares and unmarked taxis: fix the price first.
  • The west bus terminal involves walking over dirt and gravel to board — allow extra time with bags.
