Choróní

Spend 2 days in Choróní, arrive by bus ~2 h from Maracay; enjoy Playa Grande beach and boat trips to Cepe and Chuao.

Choróní is a small coastal town in Aragua, Central Venezuela. The historic plaza sits inland while the main beaches are at nearby Puerto Colombia. The winding 45‑km road through Henri Pittier National Park makes the 2‑hour bus ride an adventure, but the area rewards with golden sand, forested hills and easy boat access to secluded coves.

  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.

Watch out

Safety

Choróní is generally safe for tourists; main risks are the steep, narrow road and occasional night travel on unlit routes.
  • The 45‑km road is narrow with hairpin bends; buses may need to reverse.
  • Taxis often race blind bends; drive with extreme caution if self‑driving.
  • Limited night transport – plan return before dark.
