  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Golden sits at the mouth of Clear Creek where the plains meet the Front Range, 13 mi (21 km) west of downtown Denver and about 12 mi (19 km) south of Boulder. It is a small walkable downtown — Coors Brewery, the Colorado Railroad Museum, a mile-long whitewater park and trailheads — with Denver's light rail W line running to its southeast edge. Most travellers need one full day plus one night; two nights if you add Lookout Mountain or a Golden Gate Canyon hike.

Watch out

Safety

Golden is a low-crime small city and safe to walk downtown after dark. The real risks are altitude, fast afternoon storms on exposed trails, cold snowmelt water in Clear Creek, and winter ice on foothills paths.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms build fast in summer; be off exposed ridges by early afternoon.
  • Clear Creek is cold, fast snowmelt water — the whitewater park is not a lazy river.
  • Some hotels marketed as "Golden" sit on 6th Ave or carry "Denver West" in the name, 10–15 min away.
  • Many downtown restaurants close early or serve breakfast and lunch only; late food means bars or Denver.
