NelsonvilleNelsonville, Ohio
Give Nelsonville one night, or a half-day stop on US-33 between Columbus and Athens: the square, the railway and a show at Stuart's Opera House.
Nelsonville is a small Appalachian Ohio town of about 5,400 people on US-33, roughly 1 h 15 min by car from Columbus and 30 min from Athens. Its draw is compact: a restored Public Square, a heritage railway, a 19th-century opera house that still books touring acts, and the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway into Athens. Most travellers see it in an afternoon or use it as a quieter, cheaper base for Hocking Hills and Athens.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: US-33 runs through town and most lodging sits outside the walkable core. The square, railway and opera house are within about 10 minutes on foot of each other. The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway links Nelsonville to Athens for cyclists and walkers. Local public transport is limited — check before relying on it.

Watch out
Safety
- US-33 traffic through town is fast and the square sits close to the road; cross with care.
- Small-town hours: many shops and restaurants close early or on Mondays — check before you drive out.
- Winter ice on the bikeway and back roads; the railway and some venues run a reduced schedule.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the surrounding hills.
