Wakefield is a compact West Yorkshire city 12 miles south of Leeds, with two sights worth the trip: the Hepworth Wakefield gallery and the National Coal Mining Museum. The centre is small and walkable, the Georgian and Victorian buildings run up Wood Street, and the district beyond is surprisingly rural. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Leeds or Sheffield, or a single night on the way through.

A free bus loops the centre Monday–Saturday every 10–15 min (bus station → The Springs → Kirkgate station → Hepworth → retail parks → Westgate station). Local Arriva and Stagecoach buses run frequently until about 18:00, then sparsely; use the train for Leeds, Sheffield and Pontefract.
