Manchester-by-the-Sea is a small North Shore town of about 5,000 people, 45 minutes by train from Boston North Station. One day covers the beach, the harbour and the centre; one night lets you eat dinner and catch a sunset. It is a base for Gloucester, Rockport and Salem rather than a destination on its own.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station, Beach Street, Summer Street and the harbour are within about 15 minutes on foot. The MBTA Rockport line runs from Boston North Station through Manchester to Gloucester and Rockport; a one-way ticket to Manchester is about $6.75 (check current fares). Route 127 links Beverly, Manchester, Gloucester and Rockport by car; Route 128 is the fast road inland. Parking at Singing Beach is restricted in summer, so check the town rules before driving.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are summer parking rules, cold water and currents at the beaches, and short seasonal opening hours.
  • Singing Beach parking is resident-permit only in the beach lot in season; use the paid lot behind the pharmacy or arrive by train.
  • Many restaurants and shops keep short hours outside summer; check before you plan a dinner.
  • The Ocean Lawn park closes after dusk.
  • Swimming is unguarded at times; cold water and strong currents on the open shore.
