  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Bordentown is a small Delaware River town about 8 km south of Trenton, with a compact downtown along Farnsworth Avenue, a riverbank park and a strong Revolutionary War streak — Thomas Paine lived here. Most travellers see it in a few hours or use it as a cheaper bed near Trenton and Philadelphia. Two nights is the practical ceiling.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. A car is needed for the motels, Crystal Lake Park and the US-130 stores. NJ Transit's River Line light rail stops at Bordentown station (100 West Park St) and runs between Trenton and Camden; buses also serve Burlington and Park streets.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real issues are uneven pavements, winter ice and unlit stretches near the riverbank after dark. Standard US precautions apply.
  • Downtown pavements are uneven brick and get icy in winter.
  • Most downtown kitchens close by 21:00–22:00; late arrivals should eat before they get in.
  • The River Line is a light rail, not a fast regional train: check the timetable before relying on it for a connection.
  • Motels on US-206 need a car; walking to downtown from there is not realistic.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for PHL and EWR: last River Line departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Farnsworth Avenue, the riverbank and Park Street, the Crosswicks Creek end of downtown.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (City Hall Historic Building, Thomas Paine Monument, John Bull Monument, Bordentown Riverbank) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. River Line timetable fixtures so late arrivals can go green or be told to take a taxi.
