Eskilstuna is Södermanland's largest city, about 100 km west of Stockholm on the Eskilstunaån river, and Sweden's old steel and cutlery town. The centre is compact and walkable: the 1650s Rademacher forges, two free museums, a public bath and a river path. Most travellers pass through by train on the Stockholm–Västerås line; one night is enough, and a day trip works if you start early.
