Santa Maria

Give Santa Maria one night as a Highway 101 stop for Santa Maria-style tri-tip, or skip it and sleep in Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo.

Santa Maria is a working Central Coast town on Highway 101, halfway between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, and the home of Santa Maria-style barbecue: tri-tip cooked whole over red oak. There is little sightseeing in town, so most travellers use it as a cheap bed and a meal stop, or as a base for the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes and the Santa Maria Valley wine trail.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, wineries and the dunes are spread out and buses are limited. Santa Maria Regional Transit covers the city and runs to Lompoc and Vandenberg, with service ending in the evening — check the last bus before you rely on it. Regional buses link San Luis Obispo and Guadalupe; Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner stops at Guadalupe, with a connecting bus into Santa Maria.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Guadalupe and the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive Highway 166 west about 15 min, then follow signs to the dunes

One of California's largest remaining dune fields; soft sand, wind, no lifeguards.

Santa Maria Valley wineries

go

Door to door: 15–40 min

Drive Highway 101 or Foxen Canyon Road north-east of town

Tasting rooms are spread out; pick a driver or book a tour.

Solvang

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive Highway 101 south, about 40 min

Danish-style town with bakeries and wine rooms; pairs well with Buellton.

Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo

go

Door to door: 30–50 min

Drive Highway 101 north, 30–45 min

Beach, pier and a walkable downtown; easy half-day each.

Santa Barbara

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Drive Highway 101 south, about 1 h 15 min, or Amtrak to Santa Barbara then bus

Better as a separate base than a day trip from here.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Broadway (Highway 135) corridor

Chain motels and the historic Santa Maria Inn; walkable to restaurants, best for one night with a car.

Betteravia Road and Enos Ranch

Newer hotels and big-box shopping near Highway 101; easiest parking, 5–10 min drive to downtown.

Orcutt

Small town 10 min south with a handful of inns and its own Old Town strip; quieter, still car-dependent.

Watch out

Safety

Santa Maria is a normal working town, not a resort: daytime downtown and the shopping corridors are fine, but avoid walking alone at night away from lit main roads, and keep bags out of sight in parked cars.
  • Almost everything needs a car; do not book a hotel expecting to walk to the wineries or dunes.
  • Summer afternoons inland can pass 35 °C (95 °F), while the coast 20 min west stays cool and foggy — pack layers.
  • The dunes and beach at Guadalupe have soft sand, wind and no lifeguards; check conditions before swimming.
  • Some Highway 101 stretches and the wine trail are dark and unlit at night; watch for deer and cyclists.
