Reguengos de Monsaraz

Base in Monsaraz village for one night, not in Reguengos town: the walled hilltop is the sight, and it is 20 min by car from the town.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
  • Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.

Reguengos de Monsaraz is a municipality in the Alto Alentejo, on the right bank of the Guadiana near the Spanish border. Its draw is the walled village of Monsaraz, a hilltop of white houses and a castle keep above the Alqueva reservoir, plus a scatter of megalithic stones in the surrounding fields. The town of Reguengos itself is a working market town with wine estates, not a sight. Most travellers come for one night, or as a long day-trip from Évora, and the region rewards a car.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the village, the menhirs and the wineries are spread over 15–25 km of back roads. Without one, buses reach Reguengos town but not Monsaraz village reliably, so plan a taxi or a tour from Évora. Inside Monsaraz everything is on foot, on steep cobbles.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Monsaraz village

Inside the walls: guesthouses on Rua Direita, walk to the castle and viewpoints. Book ahead in spring and autumn; few rooms.

Reguengos de Monsaraz town

Market town 20 min by car from the village; more rooms, cheaper, no view. Use it if the village is full.

Alqueva lakeside

Rural tourism and winery stays around the reservoir; car essential, dark skies at night.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are summer heat, unlit rural roads at night and steep cobbles in Monsaraz after rain: wear shoes with grip and carry water.
  • Monsaraz village is small and fills up on weekends and holidays: book a bed before you drive out.
  • Summer heat is serious: 38–40 °C in July and August, little shade between the stones.
  • The Alqueva shoreline and some rural roads are unlit at night; drive slowly for livestock and deer.
  • Many village restaurants close one day a week and shut the kitchen by 21:30: check before you rely on one.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Reguengos de Monsaraz. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Mar–May, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (40 °C days), and the Alqueva shoreline in high summer · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 6 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for LIS and FAO: last bus and train departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Monsaraz walls and castle, Rua Direita, the cromlech and menhir loop, the Alqueva shoreline.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (castle keep, cromlech access, Esporão visits) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Dark-sky and summer-heat fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
