Kumana National Park, formerly Yala East, is a contiguous block to the famous Yala but managed separately and known primarily for its rich birdlife rather than leopard sightings. It is one of Sri Lanka's most important breeding grounds for migratory waterbirds, including the rare black-necked stork. The park features over twenty tanks (reservoirs) that attract elephants, deer, and crocodiles during the dry season. Access is strictly by safari jeep; walking is prohibited except on specific pilgrimage routes in April and May. It offers a quieter alternative to Yala with fewer vehicles, making it ideal for serious birdwatchers and those seeking a less crowded wildlife experience.

Taxi or tour jeep south to the park gate, then the rough 16 km (9.9 mi) entrance road.

What are the best hikes in Kumana National Park?

There are none inside the park: walking is not allowed and all access is by safari jeep. The walking you can do is outside the boundary — the short climb at Kudumbigala sanctuary and the paths around the Uganthai Malai Murugan Kovil. The April–May pada yatra pilgrimage crosses the park on foot, but that is a religious walk, not a visitor trail.

When is the best time to visit Kumana National Park?

December to April. The dry northerly winds shrink the tanks and concentrate birds, and April brings the start of the breeding season. May to September is the south-west monsoon, with heavy rain and muddy or impassable tracks; June to August is the worst of it.

Is Kumana the same as Yala National Park?

They are contiguous — Kumana was called Yala East until it was renamed in 2006 — but they are managed separately. Kumana is quieter, with fewer jeeps, and is known for birds rather than for leopards.

Can I see a leopard in Kumana?

Possibly, because the park adjoins Yala, but sightings are uncommon and you should not book a Kumana trip expecting one. Elephants, deer, wild boar, crocodiles and birds are the realistic sightings.

How do I get to Kumana National Park?

There is no train. Most visitors base themselves in Arugam Bay or Pottuvil, about 35 km north, and take a taxi or tour jeep to the gate, then the rough 16 km entrance road. From Colombo it is a 7.5–8.5 hour drive.

Do I need a guide or tracker?

You need a vehicle and driver — walking is not permitted. A tracker is optional but recommended for birding, since the tanks and water levels change through the season.
