Jerome is a former copper town on the slope of Cleopatra Hill, 27 mi south of Sedona and 35 mi north of Prescott on AZ 89A. Mining stopped in 1953 and the population fell below 100; it is now a National Historic Landmark (1967) with galleries, bars and a museum in the 1916 Douglas Mansion. The historic district is small and steep, so a day and a night covers it; the town works best as a stop on the Sedona–Prescott drive.

Getting around

Walk. The historic district is a loop of five levels on a steep hillside, with stairs and uneven pavements between them. Parking fills on weekends; the city runs a free shuttle on Art Walk weekends (first Saturday, 5–8 PM) from the middle and lower lots and the Old Jerome High School. A car is needed for the Gold King Mine and for the 89A drive to Sedona or Prescott.

Safety

Jerome is a small, busy tourist town and feels safe by day and evening; the real risks are the steep, uneven hillside, weekend parking and mountain-road weather on the 89A.
  • Weekend parking is the main friction: arrive before 10:00 or use the shuttle lots.
  • The hillside is steep with stairs and no handrails in places; the altitude is about 5,000 ft, so take the climb slowly.
  • Summer afternoon thunderstorms (Jul–Sep) bring lightning and slick roads on the 89A.
  • Winter can bring snow and ice on the Mingus Mountain stretch; check road conditions before driving it.
  • Bars and restaurants are small and fill fast on weekends; some close one or two days a week.
