Nuevo Progreso is a small Rio Grande border town of about 10,000 people facing South Texas, roughly midway between McAllen and Harlingen. Almost everyone comes for one reason: cheap prescriptions and dental work, plus a cheap meal and a margarita on Avenida Benito Juárez. The town is walkable from the bridge, so most visitors park in the US, walk across, do their business and walk back the same day. It is not a resort, and there is little to see beyond the main street.

Getting around

On foot. Dentists, pharmacies, restaurants and shops cluster within a few blocks of the international bridge, so most visitors never need a vehicle. Taxis wait near the bridge, within about 100 m of the customs house, for trips to Reynosa or the bus terminal. Driving into Mexico is possible but the crossing is slow; most people park on the US side and walk over.

Centro / Avenida Benito Juárez

Everything is within a few blocks of the bridge: dentists, pharmacies, restaurants, bars and the one budget hotel. Walkable, so this is the only area worth booking.

Reynosa (Mexico side)

About 10 miles west; far more hotels and bus links, but you then need a taxi or bus to reach the border each morning.

McAllen / Weslaco / Harlingen (US side)

Most visitors sleep in Texas and cross on foot for the day; US chain hotels are cheaper and more reliable than anything in town.

Watch out

Safety

The main street is generally safe in daylight and the crossing is quieter than other South Texas border crossings, but Tamaulipas outside town is not a place to drive at night: cross early, stay on Benito Juárez, and be back over the bridge before dark.
  • Cross by foot, not by car: the vehicle lane is much slower than the pedestrian bridge.
  • Bring your passport or card; US and Mexican border officers both check ID, and re-entry rules are strict.
  • Agree the price before you sit down in bars, and check the total on restaurant bills.
  • Prescription drugs: buy only at a licensed pharmacy and carry your own prescription; US customs rules on what you may bring back are strict.
  • Dental work: ask for the price in writing and a treatment plan before anything starts.
  • Summer afternoons are dangerously hot; carry water and do your errands in the morning.
  • The bridge area has beggars with containers on sticks; they are persistent but not a serious threat.
