Base in San José and day-trip to Cartago: the basilica and ruins take 2–3 hours, then push on to Irazú or the Orosi valley by car.
Cartago was Costa Rica's capital until 1823 and keeps the country's best cluster of colonial-era buildings, plus the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, a national pilgrimage site. The city itself is small and walkable; the reason to linger is the ring of sights around it — Irazú volcano, the Orosi valley, Lankester gardens and Cachí lake. Most travellers see the centre as a half-day from San José and use a car for the rest.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. For Irazú, Orosi, Cachí and Lankester you need a car, a taxi or a tour: local buses exist but are slow and infrequent. A commuter train runs from San José to Cartago; there is no service roughly 10:00–15:00 and the last train leaves Cartago about 18:30, so plan the day around it.

Watch out
Safety
- Irazú summit is cold, windy and often clouded by mid-morning: go at opening.
- The Irazú access road and the Orosi loop are mountain roads with fog and cyclists; drive by day.
- During Romero (late July to 2 August) and the Good Friday procession, streets near the basilica close and hotels fill.
