Sighnaghi is a small hill town of about 1,500 people above the Alazani Valley, rebuilt in the 2000s and now the most convenient base in Kakheti. The town itself needs a day; the value is in the day trips — Bodbe Convent, the wall, and wineries toward Gurjaani and Telavi. Nights are quiet. Come for views, homemade wine and Kakhetian food, not nightlife.

Getting around

The old town is walkable in 15 minutes end to end, but it is on a hill with cobbles and steps. Bodbe Convent is 2 km out (about 25 min on foot, downhill out, uphill back) — take a taxi one way if it is hot. For wineries, Gurjaani, Telavi or the Sunday market at Bodbiskhevi, hire a taxi by the day or join a guesthouse tour; there is no useful local bus network.

Watch out

Safety

Sighnaghi is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night; the real risks are uneven cobbles and steps, summer heat, unmarked restaurant service charges and unlicensed drivers after wine tastings.
  • Some restaurants add an unadvertised 15% service charge, which is not legal in Georgia — ask before ordering.
  • Marshrutkas to Tbilisi fill up; buy your ticket at the kiosk on the square a few hours ahead, or ask your guesthouse to call the driver.
  • The wall walkway is partly overgrown and has a steep drop and a roughly 4 m step beyond the maintained section — turn back at the towers.
  • Candle sellers and unofficial 'guides' at churches may ask for a fee; there is no admission charge.
  • Winter is cold and quiet: confirm your guesthouse is open and heated before booking.
