Pangandaran is a small south-coast town in West Java's East Parahyangan, built around a peninsula nature reserve with an east beach for sunrise and a west beach for sunset. It is a local holiday favourite, so weekends and national holidays fill up while weekdays stay calm. Two nights covers the reserve and Green Canyon; three adds Batu Karas or a slow beach day.

Getting around

Walk or cycle the beach strip; bicycles rent for about Rp25,000 a day and motorbikes about Rp50,000 plus petrol. Becak rides start around Rp10,000 but need hard bargaining — the fixed rate from the bus terminal is Rp30,000. Minibuses and buses leave from the terminal and the Perkasa Jaya depot north of town.

Watch out

Safety

Pangandaran is a low-crime beach town; the real risks are rip currents on the ocean beaches, scooters on unlit roads at night and holiday crowds. Swim between flags or not at all.
  • Weekends and national holidays bring heavy domestic crowds and higher room rates — book ahead.
  • The reserve charges foreigners far more than locals; bring cash and expect a higher rate on Sundays and holidays.
  • ATMs cluster near the bus terminal and Nyiur Indah, not at the beach — carry cash.
  • Green Canyon boat queues build up on holidays; go early on a weekday.
  • Roads to Citumang and Green Valley are rough — only with a confident rider.
