Valencia is Venezuela's third-largest city and the capital of Carabobo state, on the Autopista Regional del Centro about 220 km west of Caracas. It is a working city with a colonial centre, big malls and a hiking hill, not a resort. Most travellers pass through on the road to the Andes or the coast, and two nights covers it. Read your own government travel advice before booking anything: this desk does not plan around it.

Getting around

Taxis and buses. Bus routes are confusing and stops are not announced, so ask the driver or use a taxi for anything time-sensitive. A metro has been under construction for years with some stations opened. Distances between the centre and the northern malls are short by car and awkward on foot.

Safety

Valencia is a normal working city, not a tourist zone: robberies by people posing as police are reported at the bus terminal, and the centre is best avoided after dark. Carry small US dollar notes, leave valuables in the hotel, and use taxis you booked yourself.
  • Travellers have reported robberies by people posing as police at the bus terminal: keep documents and cash out of sight and use a hotel-arranged taxi.
  • Cash is king: US dollars in small notes are widely used, and card and ATM access is unreliable.
  • Avoid walking the centre after dark, including the Calle de los Cafés restaurant strip in La Viña.
  • Roads between cities can close without notice during protests; check before any drive.
