Dumfries is the market town of Dumfries and Galloway in southwest Scotland, on the River Nith and the road and rail line between Carlisle and Glasgow. Robert Burns spent his last years here, and his house, centre and mausoleum are the main reason to stop. Most travellers use it as one night between England and Scotland, or as a base for Caerlaverock Castle, Sweetheart Abbey and the Solway coast.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to High Street is about 10 min on foot. Local buses (Houston's 372 and 6A, Stagecoach 246) reach New Abbey, Caerlaverock and Ellisland but run every 2–3 hours and not at all on some Sundays, so a car is the practical choice for the wider area. National Cycle Route 7 passes through town.

Safety

Dumfries is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are rural roads, fast A75/A76 traffic, midges in summer and weather that turns on the hills.
  • Many rural sights are closed or on winter hours Oct–Mar: check each site before you drive out.
  • Local buses to Caerlaverock and New Abbey are infrequent and stop early; the last return can leave you stranded.
  • Sweetheart Abbey has had parts closed for repairs: check before travelling.
  • The camera obscura at Dumfries Museum has been closed; confirm before you climb the tower.
