Moosonee is a town of about 1,500 people on the Moose River, near James Bay, with no year-round road in. Almost everyone arrives on the Ontario Northland Polar Bear Express from Cochrane, about 5 hours, five days a week year round. The town itself is small and walkable in an afternoon; the reason to come is the rail ride, the river, Moose Factory across the water and the edge-of-the-map feel. One night covers it. Two nights if you want a boat trip or a slower look at the Cree community of Moose Factory.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20–30 minutes. Taxis (Northway, Mahekun, DC Cab) cover longer hauls and the airport. Moose Factory is across the Moose River: boat in open water, ice road in winter; check the crossing before you plan a day there.

Safety

Moosonee is a small, quiet town and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are the environment: extreme cold, fast river currents, thin ice in shoulder seasons and long distances with no road out. Tell someone your plan and check conditions locally.
  • No year-round road: you arrive by train, plane, boat, canoe or winter ice road, and you leave the same way.
  • Freeze-up (late Nov–mid-Dec) and spring break-up (April) can stop river crossings and ice roads.
  • January means about −27 °C at night: bring a real winter coat, not a city jacket.
  • Cell service works in Moosonee and Moose Factory, but coverage on the rail line and coast is patchy.
  • Book the train and a bed before you commit: seats and rooms are limited and summer trains fill.
