Fisterra is the headland Galicians call the end of the world: a working fishing village of narrow streets with a lighthouse cape 4 km south. Most people arrive on foot as a three-day extension of the Camino from Santiago, or by bus for a day. The town is small, the coast is rough, and one night covers it unless you are walking.

Watch out

Safety

A small, safe fishing village. The real risks are the exposed cape in fog and wind, rough Atlantic water on the west beach, and narrow streets with no sidewalk in the centre.
  • The cape is exposed: fog and wind can arrive fast, and the lighthouse has no interior access.
  • Mar de Fóra beach on the west side is usually too rough to swim.
  • Do not leave boots or burn kit at the cape: fines apply and wildfires are a real risk in Galicia.
  • Many hostels and the municipal albergue close outside April–October: book ahead in shoulder season.
