Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Bournemouth is a Victorian seaside resort on the Dorset coast with 11 km of sand, a clifftop-and-gardens centre and a compact, walkable core. It works as a 2-night coastal stop or a long day trip from Poole, Christchurch or the New Forest, and it is the easiest place on this coast to reach by train from London.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: the Square, gardens, pier and West Cliff are within 15 min of each other. More buses cover Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole; the rail station is a 10–15 min uphill walk from the centre, so take a bus or taxi with bags.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Poole

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Harbour, old town and Brownsea Island ferries; easy half-day.

Christchurch

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Train from Bournemouth, about 10 min, or bus along Christchurch Road

Priory, quay and Hengistbury Head; pairs well with a Boscombe morning.

Corfe Castle

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Train to Wareham then the Swanage Railway or bus, or drive about 40 min

Village and castle ruin; a full day with the steam railway.

Weymouth

go

Door to door: About 1 h

South Western Railway from Bournemouth, about 50–60 min

Sand beach and Georgian seafront; doable as a day return.

Isle of Portland

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Long for a day trip; better with a car or an overnight in Weymouth.

Lyme Regis

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Train to Axminster then bus, or drive about 1 h 30 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in Lyme or Axminster.

Sherborne

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train from Bournemouth, about 1 h 15 min with a change

Abbey and two castles; check connections before committing.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

West Cliff / seafront

Clifftop hotels above the Square and BIC; sea views, 5–10 min walk down to the beach.

Town centre / the Square

Gardens, pier and shops on foot; busiest and noisiest at weekends.

Boscombe

Cheaper beds east of the centre, own pier and beach; 10–15 min by bus.

Westbourne

Quiet boutiques and cafés west of the centre; good for longer stays, few hotels.

Watch out

Safety

Bournemouth is a safe seaside town by day; the real issues are summer weekend crowds and drink-fuelled nights around the club strip, plus strong currents and cold water on the beach — swim between the flags.
  • Summer weekend traffic on the A31 and Wessex Way is heavy; arrive early or the evening before.
  • Speed cameras on the Wessex Way.
  • The rail station is uphill from the centre — allow 10–15 min on foot.
  • Beach and pier areas are busy and drink-fuelled on summer weekend nights; the town centre club strip is loud after dark.

  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for BOH and SOU: shuttle and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, late-arrival rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: the Square and gardens, West Cliff and pier, Boscombe, Westbourne.
  3. Place pages with verified opening hours (Russell-Cotes, Oceanarium, pier) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Summer-weekend and Air Festival crowd fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
