Pacific City

Give Pacific City one night, two if you want the dory boats and Cape Kiwanda at sunrise: it is a small beach town, not a base for the whole coast.

Pacific City is a village of about 1,000 people on the Northern Oregon Coast, built around a dune-backed beach, a sandstone headland at Cape Kiwanda and a fleet of flat-bottomed dory boats that launch straight off the sand. There is no airport and no rail; you arrive by car on US 101. Most travellers stop for one night between Tillamook and Lincoln City, or use it as a weekend base from Portland.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: US 101 runs through town, and the beaches, refuge and state parks are 5–15 min apart by road. Parking at Cape Kiwanda fills on summer weekends — arrive before 10:00. Walking works inside town and along the beach; there is no local bus service.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real hazards are ocean and road. Sneaker waves kill people on this coast every year, and US 101 fog plus logging trucks make night driving the thing to avoid.
  • Sneaker waves and strong currents on the whole Oregon coast: never turn your back on the surf, and keep children off driftwood logs.
  • The Cape Kiwanda dune is loose sand with a steep drop on the ocean side; the fence line is there for a reason.
  • Cell coverage is patchy south of town and in the Nestucca Bay area.
  • Summer lodging books out weeks ahead; walk-in rooms in July and August are unlikely.
  • Coastal fog and rain arrive fast — carry a shell even on a clear morning.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for PDX: last sensible departure time, rental-car desk hours, overnight rung at a PDX airport hotel.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Cape Kiwanda, town centre, Shorepine spit, Whalen Island.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and fees (Cape Kiwanda, Bob Straub, Clay Myers, Sitka Sedge, Nestucca Bay) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Storm and fog fixtures so coastal driving days can go green or be swapped for Tillamook.
