Mayapan is a walled Postclassic Maya city about 50 km south of Mérida, once the region's main power after Chichén Itzá fell. It is not a town: there is no lodging at the site, one lunch restaurant in the nearby village of Telchaquillo, and no on-site food. As of January 2026 the archaeological zone is closed to visitors because of a dispute between INAH and the ejido that owns the land, so a trip here now means a drive past a locked gate. Plan the day around Mérida, Uxmal or Chichén Itzá, and treat Mayapan as a stop to re-check before you book anything.

Getting around

You walk the site; wear closed shoes and socks. To reach the area you need a car, taxi or bus to Telchaquillo, then a 1 km walk south on MEX-184. Do not navigate to "Mayapan" on GPS: that points at a different town. Use Techaquillo (Telchaquillo) as the destination.

Watch out

Safety

The area around the ruins is quiet farmland and low-risk by day; the real issues are heat, no shade or water at the site, patchy 3G and driving MEX-184 after dark. Do not cross fences or gates at the closed zone.
  • The archaeological zone is closed to public access as of January 2026 over an INAH–ejido land dispute; re-check before travelling.
  • GPS and maps send you to a town also called Mayapan, far from the ruins. Navigate to Telchaquillo instead.
  • No food, water or shade inside the zone; the nearest food is 2 km north in Telchaquillo.
  • No hotels or camping at or near the site; the nearest real choice of rooms is Mérida.
  • Cell service is 3G and patchy around the site; download offline maps before you leave Mérida.
