Birnam
Stay 1 night, not 3: the Birnam Oak, the riverside walk and the Hermitage fill a day; Dunkeld across the bridge is the other half.
Birnam is a small Highland-edge village on the west bank of the Tay, joined to Dunkeld by a bridge built in 1809. It is the last fragment of Shakespeare's Birnam Wood, a base for forest walks above Craigvinean, and a rail stop on the Perth–Inverness line. Most travellers see it in a day; one night lets you walk the Hermitage in the morning light.

Watch out
Safety
- Dunkeld & Birnam station is not step-free: trains both ways use Platform 1, and Platform 2 is reached only by a footbridge.
- Platforms are low, so the on-train ramp cannot be used; ask staff before boarding if you need help.
- Some Inverness trains pass through without stopping — change at Perth.
- Forest tracks above Craigvinean are steep and can be icy from late autumn; light fades early behind the crags.
