Stay 1 night in Mersing town only if you're catching a morning boat to Tioman or the islands; otherwise pass through.
Mersing is a small east-coast Johor town of about 21,000 people, 136 km northeast of Johor Bahru, and it is the main ferry gateway to Tioman and the offshore islands. Most travellers use it as a stopover, but the town itself has a slow, traditional feel, a river esplanade, a hilltop mosque with views, and beaches at Air Papan and Penyabung a short drive north. Two nights is enough to see the town and one beach; one night is enough if you are only transiting to the islands.

Mersing town is small enough to walk: the bus terminal, jetty, market and most restaurants are within 15 minutes on foot. For Air Papan, Penyabung or Endau you need a car, taxi or local bus. Mersing Harbour Centre handles bus and ferry counters, taxis, hotel and trip bookings, and a tourism information desk.

Watch out
Safety
- The northeast monsoon (roughly November to February) brings rough seas and ferry cancellations to Tioman and other islands: check sailing status before you commit to a crossing.
- Direct buses from Johor Bahru's Larkin terminal to Mersing are limited; the last afternoon departures may be too late for the final island ferry.
- On the way out, buses can be full if you have not pre-booked; the local bus to Kota Tinggi then another to Larkin is a fallback.
- Beaches at Air Papan and Penyabung are relatively isolated: take care with valuables and swimming, and arrange your return transport in advance.
- There is no reputable international car-rental brand in Mersing; arrange a rental in Johor Bahru or another major city.
